Urban Forests and Air Quality Improvement: How Corporates Can Make a Difference

Mumbai and Bangalore are buzzing cities. The traffic, the skyscrapers, the endless construction. But all this comes at a cost. The air is getting worse. Pollution is rising. People feel it in every breath. That is where urban forests can help, and AWF is showing the way.

Urban forests are not just trees. They are lungs for the city. They filter dust, absorb pollutants, and cool the air. AWF has worked on projects near Mumbai, like in Kisal village, and in Bangalore, planting thousands of native tree species on degraded land close to urban zones. These forests may not be in the heart of the city, but they make a real difference for nearby communities.

The Kisal project is a great example. Over 20,000 trees were planted during the 2025 monsoon, with a target of 1 lakh trees for 2026. Trees like Neem, Jamun, Mango, and Pongamia are not just greenery. They are biodiversity hotspots, provide shade, support bees and birds, and recharge groundwater. The project also engages rural communities, employing over 200 families and empowering women with seasonal income.

Corporate participation amplifies this impact. AWF works with companies contributing at least 500 trees. Each plantation comes with an 80G certificate, geotagged data, and an impact assessment report. This ensures CSR tree plantation initiatives are transparent, measurable, and impactful. The trees planted have a survival rate of over 85 percent, verified by VERRA standards, so every investment counts.

Urban forests do more than clean the air. They help reduce heat in nearby neighbourhoods, improve groundwater levels, and create green corridors for wildlife. They are a simple, cost-effective climate action solution. Corporates get to fulfil CSR objectives while contributing to carbon offset, ecosystem restoration, and community livelihood support.

Partnering with AWF is easy. You plan your tree plantation, contribute a minimum of 500 trees, and AWF manages the rest—from planting to monitoring. You get geotagged trees, detailed ecological reports, and evidence of your impact. This is CSR done right.

Urban forests are not just about the environment. They are about people. Cleaner air, cooler neighbourhoods, jobs for rural families, and a greener India. Corporations that join AWF in these projects are not only planting trees; they are planting hope for a sustainable future.
